Quality & Safety.
Without compromise.
Certified systems, shared responsibility, and a proactive safety culture that protects people, cargo, and the planet.
At SAL, quality and safety are non-negotiable. Our integrated QHSE management system underpins every voyage – aligning people, processes, and tools so projects run safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. The goal is simple: zero harm, rigorous compliance, and reliable performance for our customers.
Our QHSE policy in action
Through our QHSE policy, we affirm our commitment to safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible operations – every day, everywhere. We meet applicable laws and customer requirements, consult our teams, and hold ourselves accountable through regular audits, inspections, and management reviews.
Core commitments
- Prevent incidents and occupational illnesses; protect the environment
- Identify hazards/risks and set effective controls before work begins
- Monitor, investigate, and learn – closing out findings and non-conformities
- Engage contractors and visitors in the same high standards
Safety, training & involvement
Safety is a team sport. Crews, port captains, engineers, and project managers are involved from planning through execution: risk assessments, toolbox talks, permit-to-work, and equipment checks are built into the workflow.
How we build capability
- Regular HSE training and seminars (on board and ashore)
- On-board QHSE visits and safety committee participation
- Feedback loops from vessels to shore for continuous improvement
The benefits are real: fewer delays and incidents lead to greater schedule certainty, while better coordination and documentation make stakeholder approvals smoother. Our proven systems and training also simplify pre-qualification and tendering.
Safety vettings & third-party assurance
We welcome customer and third-party vettings as proof of performance. Across fleet and shore operations, SAL undergoes regular inspections, audits, and client-specific approvals that assess how we plan, execute, document, and learn. These reviews confirm that our practices meet – and often exceed – stringent project and industry expectations.
What this typically includes:
From pre-contract due diligence (QHSE questionnaires, document reviews, interviews), to on site and onboard verification of permits, equipment, and crew, through optional operational observation (e.g., lifts, toolbox talks, stop-work authority), to documented actions, corrective measures, and lessons learned fed back into our management system.
Why it matters
Independent verification strengthens confidence in our capability and compliance, lowers the risk of schedule disruption and rework, and speeds up approvals and mobilisation thanks to ready, auditable records.
Our aim is clear: transparent evidence, consistent practice, and continuous improvement – so every vetting builds confidence in the project ahead.
Act Safely – our group-wide safety programme
Act Safely is the Harren Group programme that shapes day-to-day behaviour on board and ashore. It focuses on the moments that matter most – where good planning and the right choices prevent serious harm.
Our principles
Plan. Prepare the task, align on each step.
Think. Pause, reassess risks as conditions change.
Act. If something feels unsafe, stop the job – everyone has the right and responsibility to do so.
In practice, we enforce clear rules – applied by trained people and verified for compliance – covering work authorisation (permits), safety guards, confined space, hot work, working at height, safe lifting, PPE, and safe driving.
ISO-backed, system-driven
Our integrated management system is aligned with ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety). These certifications keep our processes auditable, our improvements measurable, and our performance consistent – fleetwide and shore-side.
ISO 9001 — Quality Management
ISO 9001 certifies that our quality management system is documented, controlled, and continuously improved. For clients, it means clear processes, defined responsibilities, and dependable outcomes on every project.
What this ensures
- Risk-based planning and verification at each project phase
- Controlled documentation and change management
- Continuous improvement via audits, KPIs, and management reviews
What it means commercially
- Fewer deviations and re-works → more schedule certainty
- Traceable quality records → smoother approvals and handovers
- Recognised standard → easier pre-qualification/tendering
ISO 14001 — Environmental Management
ISO 14001 confirms our systematic approach to environmental protection – from voyage and port planning to equipment maintenance and waste handling. We identify significant environmental aspects and set controls to reduce impact.
What this ensures
- Defined environmental objectives and monitoring
- Emissions, waste, and spill-prevention controls
- Route-specific compliance and emergency preparedness
What it means commercially
- Lower environmental risk → fewer disruptions and costs
- Documented compliance → meets stakeholder and lender expectations
- Credible ESG signals → supports customer sustainability goals
ISO 45001 — Occupational Health & Safety
ISO 45001 verifies that we identify hazards, assess risks, and operate safe systems of work – on board and ashore. Training, participation, and continual improvement are built into day-to-day operations.
What this ensures
- Formal hazard/risk identification and controls
- Permit-to-work, toolbox talks, and equipment checks
- Incident reporting, investigation, and lessons learned
What it means commercially
- Fewer incidents → greater reliability and predictability
- Strong HSE record → faster client vettings and approvals
- Protected workforce → sustained project performance
